Tanning bed tips for beginners.

Having healthy, glowing skin is no longer limited to the summertime or visiting exotic tropical areas. With the birth of tanning salons, anyone can maintain that sun-kissed look all year long. Sunbed tanning provides health benefits, like vitamin D production, improved mood, hormonal balance, and can alleviate skin conditions like acne and psoriasis.

There are many different tips and tricks to tanning to achieve the perfect tan, and those new to tanning should know how to tan safely, optimizing tanning results before your first session.

After Glow Tanning offers the Daytona Beach and Port Orange, FL areas a meticulously designed tanning salon with top-of-the-line tanning and spray tanning equipment, a highly knowledgeable staff, and is one of the area's best tanning salons.

Here are a few tanning bed tips we recommend for beginners.

Know your skin type

Before beginning a tanning regimen, you must know your skin type. There are six different skin types: skin type 1 being on the lighter side and skin type 6 being darker. Knowing your specific skin type is vital as some people burn easier than others when overexposed to UV rays. When using the tanning beds, always use tanning lotions specially made for indoor tanning. At After Glow Tanning, we have a large selection of tanning lotions from Devoted Lotions, ranging from Self-bronzers and Accelerator lotions to Tingle lotions which help increase blood flow and boost the effects of UV rays.

Choose the right type of tanning bed

Tanning beds are machines that use ultraviolet (UV) radiation produced by fluorescent tubes or bulbs to give the skin an artificial tan similar to the UV rays from the sun. UVA-rays from high-pressure lamps oxidize the existing melanin in your skin and do not produce any Vitamin D or build up any additional melanin to prepare the skin for further tanning. UVB-rays from low-pressure lamps, on the other hand, make the body produce both Vitamin D and more melanin. For this reason, tanners need to understand the difference in tanning beds and choose a salon that has the correct equipment for your needs. At After Glow Tanning, we offer five different levels of state-of-the-art tanning beds that range from Competition Series tanning beds to a Sun Capsule stand-up bed, which leaves you glowing.

When arriving at your tanning appointment, it is imperative to read all precautionary labels before using any tanning bed. Every tanning salon has different tanning beds, and these labels have vital information on exposure time for different skin types and turning time while in the sunbed.

Know what to do before, during, and after your tanning appointment

Preparing your skin by showering, shaving, and exfoliating a day or two before you arrive at your tanning session is a crucial step in the tanning process. Focus heavily on the rough areas of your body that need the most attention, like elbows, knees, ankles, and feet, and be sure to remove all sunscreen and moisturizer on your face. If you are pressed for time, using a loofah, brush, or bath puff during shower time works just fine.

Once you are in a secure tanning room, disrobe to your level of comfort. If you choose to be nude, be sure to cover areas not typically exposed to the sun. The law requires that tanning clients use the proper eye protection since UV rays can be harmful to the eyes, so ask one of our staff members for a pair of protective goggles.

After your tanning session, you are free to schedule your next tanning session. But it is recommended by the FDA that there is a 24-hour resting period between sessions for maximum color and skincare health.
